Guwahati: Pointing fingers at the government and chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the opposition Congress in Assam on Saturday have taken out a ‘Dispur Gherau’ march and demanded CBI probe in the Assam police exam scam.

Demanding CBI probe in the scam, the Assam Youth Congress party staged a protest rally in front of Manabendra Sarma Complex in Dispur.

The police, however, put a stop to the ongoing protest and detained some of the protesters.

Moreover, one of the protesters was severely injured in the process.

Koliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, MLA Rokibul Hussain, MLA Rekkibuddin Ahmed along with national and state leaders of Youth congress was present.

Demanding the resignation of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, alleging that he was directly involved in the scam, Gaurav Gogoi said, “the probe cannot be impartial as long as he is the chief minister”.

The written exam to recruit T587 sub-inspector (SI) was cancelled on September 20 after the question paper got leaked and was found circulating on Whatsapp. Nearly 64,000 applicants were scheduled to appear for the examination.

Meanwhile, Prime suspect in the scam Diban Deka was arrested by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam police on the wee hours of October 1.

Deka was taken under five-day custody after he was arrested from Patacharkuchi area of Lower Assam’s Barpeta district and was taken back to Guwahati on Wednesday night itself. The accused was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate and forwarded on five-day police custody. Accordingly, the Crime Branch of the Assam Police will question Deka to unearth his involvement in the scam.

The police will produce Deka before the Court again on October 6.

However, Anchalik Gana Morcha chief convenor and Rajya Sabha-elect member Ajit Kumar Bhuyan termed the investigation of the Assam police job scam a ‘foul play’ and at the same time demanded Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to ‘quit’ from office.

Notably, the alleged mastermind of the scam retired DIG PK Dutta is yet to come under the police’s radar.
