Guwahati: One person was arrested for allegedly being involved in human trafficking in Assam’s Udalguri district on Thursday.

The arrested accused has been identified as Sonu Mukta.

According to sources, at least two minor girls were sold off by Mukta in Delhi. The official also informed that the accused sold off the minors for a sum of Rs 10,000.

However, the police team arrested him at Nonaipara Tea Estate in Paneri.

Mukta reportedly revealed shocking information about a deadly network of human traffickers in the state while being interrogated on camera, sources stated.

Meanwhile, the state registered the third highest number of cases of Human Trafficking in 2021, reveals the data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). People are routinely trafficked illegally through the state for commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour, forced marriage, domestic servitude, and other reasons.

In 2021, over 203 cases of human trafficking were registered as compared to 124 cases in 2020. As many as 460 victims were trafficked from the state, while 425 victims were rescued in 2021, according to NCRB data.
