Assam: Police open fire at vehicle in Tinsukia ahead of I Day

Guwahati: The Tinsukia police allegedly opened fire in a four-wheeler’s vehicle on Sunday.

Police have been ramped up in several areas of Assam ahead of Independence Day due to the United Liberation Front of Asom-(ULFA-I) Independent’s demands for a bandh.

The incident took place at around 2 AM in the Borguri Bypass in the district.

According to sources, the vehicle was ordered to be stopped during the night search operation at Borguri Bypass.

The driver of the vehicle ignored police orders and fled from the scene. Police allegedly opened fire on the vehicle as a result.

The investigation for the vehicle continues on.

The banned outfit has called for the bandh from midnight of August 14 till 6 pm on August 15.

On Saturday, Assam’s special director general of police (SDGP) GP Singh said, “Usually, they (ULFA-I) targets oil and tea sector and people belonging to linguistic minority communities. State police have reviewed all security measures already.”

Meanwhile, sources added that a group of ULFA (I) ultras might possibly try to enter Tinsukia district in an attempt to strike on or before I-Day celebrations. Security measures have already being tightened in the district.
