Assam Police To Implement Extended COVID-19 Lockdown With ‘Ruthlessness’

Assam Police emphasized that during the lockdown 2.0, it will be stricter and actions will be taken against anyone found violating even norms.

With the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)-induced lockdown in the entire country being extended by another 19 days, the Assam Police made it clear that the second phase of the lockdown will be implemented with “ruthlessness” till April 20th, 2020.

Assam ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh in a tweet said, “The lockdown is till May 3rd. However, ruthlessness and strict implementation till April 20th may yield some relaxations further on.”

He added, “It’s ruthlessness of the purpose, laced with kindness to the people, for the overall benefit of the mankind. That has been our Mantra all these weeks.”

Assam Police emphasized that during the lockdown 2.0, it will be stricter and actions will be taken against anyone found violating even norms.

“Let there be no doubts in anyone’s mind. Lockdown till May 3 and strict implementation till April 20, when a review will be done of the situation,” Assam Police wrote on its official Twitter handle.

Sources said that the police across the State will check each and every person and vehicles plying on the road to contain the spread of the highly contagious virus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14th, 2020 announced that the nationwide lockdown will now be extended by 19 more days and will continue till May 3rd, 2010.

Modi had earlier announced a 21-day lockdown on March 25th, 2020 to break the transmission of COVID-19, which has affected over 10,000 people in India so far. The lockdown was scheduled to end on April 14th, 2020.

Internationally acclaimed actor from the State, Adil Hussain appreciated the “ruthlessness” move of Assam Police.

“It’s absolutely vital to enforce the lockdown and #flattenedthecurve of further infection. Please Forgive me for being audacious to earnestly request you, let Ruthlessness of Enforcement be Smeared with a bit of Kindness. It would be Difficult but Possible,” the ‘Life of Pi’ actor wrote.

It may be noted, Modi  indicated at easing of lockdown restrictions in places where there is no hotspot after April 20th, 2020.

“Until April 20th, 2020, every town, every police station, every district, every state will be evaluated on how much the lockdown is being followed. The extent to which the region has protected itself from coronavirus will be noted. Our country has greatly benefited from social distancing and lockdown,” Modi said.

He added, “Areas that will succeed in this litmus test, which will not be in the hot-spot category and will have less likelihood to turn into a hot-spot, may be allowed to open up select necessary activities from April 20th, 2020.”
