GUWAHATI: In Assam, almost 37 percent of the MLAs in the state’s House of 126 have an educational qualification not higher than 12 th pass, said the latest report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) Assam election watch.
An ADR report published on Monday said that at least 44 (37%) MLAs have declared their educational qualification to be between 5 th pass and 12th pass while 74 (62%) MLAs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. Only one MLA is a Diploma holder.
“Congress MLA from Badarpur constituency, Jamal Uddin Ahmed, has the lowest educational qualification. He is only 5th pass. Aziz Ahmed Khan, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA from Karimganj South Constituency and Nizam Uddin Choudhury, AIUDF MLA from Algapur constituency are the only 8 th pass,” the report said.
The analysis was based on the affidavit submitted by the candidates prior to the 2016 Assembly elections and bye-elections conducted thereafter.
Party wise AIUDF has the highest percentage of MLAs who have educational qualifications up to 12 th standard.
“Some 43 % AIUDF MLAs (6 out of 14), 41% BJPMLAs (24 out of 59), 35% Congress MLAs (7 out of 20), 33% Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) MLAs (4 out of 12) and 15% of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)MLAs (2 out of 13)have qualification between 5th Pass and 12th pass,” the report added.
State’s powerful minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of BJP and AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam from Jania Constituency are the only Doctorate degree holders.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is also a graduate in law.
