Assam Polls: 73 Crorepatis in Fray for Phase-II; 3 has assets over Rs 100 Cr
GUWAHATI: At least 73 crorepatis were in the fray for the second phase of Assam assembly elections slated on April 1. Three candidates from the second phase declared to have total assets worth over Rs 100 crore.
The second phase of polls would be held in 39 constituencies in the state.
The Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) who have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 345candidates in the fray for the Phase II polls, in a report released on Wednesday said that there were at least 21 candidates whose total assets were worth more than Rs 5 cr while 28 others have total assets worth over Rs 2 crore.
As per the report, amongst the richest candidates from the second phase, an independent candidate from Udharbond- Rahul Roy-has the highest assets worth Rs 1,31,22,41,783 (131 Crore+).
With assets worth a few lakhs less, another independent candidate from Algapur constituency-Daisy Roy- was the second richest candidate with assets worth Rs 1,31,14,59,331.
Perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal’s brother Siraj Uddin Ajmal who was contesting from Jamunamukh constituency under All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) party came third in the list of the richest candidates with assets worth Rs 111 Crore+.
The report said, “Among the major parties 19 out of 34 candidates analysed from BJP, 18 out of 28 candidates analysed from Congress, six out of 19 candidates analysed from Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), five out of 7 candidates analysed from AIUDF, three out of four candidates analysed from Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) and three out of six Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidates have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.”
An independent candidate from Ratabari constituency, Bishnu Dhari Malah, was listed as having the lowest assets worth Rs 8,158 amongst all the candidates in the fray for the second phase.
