Guwahati: Ahead of the Assam polls, the Congress party workers have ‘gheraoed’ the grand old party’s Headquarters Rajiv Bhawan at Guwahati to protest against the party’s leadership.
The party workers staged a protest against the leadership for depriving the Congress candidates by giving the Gauripur constituency seat to the All India Democratic Front (AIUDF), as per the seat-sharing agreement.
Reportedly, some of the party workers in several constituencies in the state have been vandalizing the party offices.
Earlier, AIUDF released the first list of 16 candidates for the Assam assembly election. The party has put 11 candidates in alliance with its partners while it has decided to go for a friendly contest in five seats.
The Congress, which was in power for 15 years in Assam since 2001, has formed a ‘Grand Alliance’ with the AIUDF, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) to fight the upcoming Assembly election against the BJP-led NDA.
Assam will go to the polls on March 27, April 1, and April 6 respectively. The counting of the votes will take place on May 2.
