    Assam Polls: Home Guard and Driver Died in Accident During Election Duty

    At least 34 home guard personnel received injuries and were being treated at Silchar medical college hospital

    GUWAHATI: An Assam Police home guard Hem Kanta Gogoi and a civilian driver identified as Pappu Bhuyan died while the bus carrying home guard personnel from Lakhimpur to Hailakandi for election duty met with an accident at Bandarkhal, Dima Hasao on Monday.

    While the driver died on the spot, the home guard personnel died on Tuesday.

    Special director general of Assam Police, GP Singh informed that at least 34 homeguard personnel received injuries and were being treated at Silchar medical college hospital (SMCH).

    “Senior officers of Silchar, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao and North Lakhimpur are monitoring treatment and follow-up procedures. We would look after the families in best traditions of Assam Police,” he said in a tweet.

    As per injured police personnel, the vehicle skidded off a dilapidated hilly road and fell into a deep gorge. Security personnel traveling in another bus jumped into rescue operation and took the dead and the injured to a nearby health centre at Harangajao.
