GUWAHATI: Assam recorded a very high 79.97 percent voter turnout in the recently concluded Phase I of the Assam assembly polls. The first phase was held on Saturday.
On Monday, the chief electoral officer (CEO) Assam’s office informed that the final figure of the voter turnout for the first phase of the election was 79.97 percent across the 47 constituencies which had gone to polls.
In the first phase of polls, fates of political heavyweights like chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Asom Gana Parisad (AGP) ministers Atul Bora and Kesab Mahanta, peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, Assam Jaitya Parishad (AJP) president LurinJyoti Gogoi were sealed in the first phase.
From Congress also, its top leaders like Ripun Bora, party leader Debabrata Saikia, AICC secretary Bhupen Borah, former ministers Bharat Narah, Pranatee Phukan and Rakibul Hussain tried their lucks in the first phase of polls.
Altogether, 264 candidates, including 23 women, were in the fray in the first phase of elections.
The second phase of the Assam assembly will be held on April 1 and the third phase will be held on April 6.
