Assam Pradesh Congress chief Ripun Bora tastes dust; Mahajot to remain in Opposition
GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora who claimed that Congress-led Mahajot (grand alliance) would form the next state government faced a humiliating defeat on Sunday as the counting of votes of the state assembly election was ongoing.
Bora who contested from Gohpur seat lost to BJP’s Utpal Bora. Though the official declaration was awaited, reports said that the Congress leader lost by some 14,118 votes.
Bora reacting to the results said, “I congratulate all the winning candidates of Congress and Mahajot. I courageously accept the verdict of the people. We fought till the end. I would also like to thank all those who supported me. But we will continue our fight for peace, democracy and secularism.”
He had said that Congress-led Mahajot would get over 100 out of the total 126 seats. However, the trend showed that Congress and its alliance could manage only halfway mark.
