Guwahati: Nagaon Police with the help of Darrang Police arrested the mastermind and prime accused in the Batadrava arson incident on Thursday.
The accused Alauddin was held by the police for setting fire to the Batadrava police station after a man allegedly died in police custody.
Alauddin allegedly escaped from Batadrava after setting fire to the police station and went into hiding when authorities identified him from video evidence. Footage shows the accused leading the attack on Batadraba PS on May 20.
A team of Nagaon police arrived in Darrang and conducted a massive manhunt with the support of Dhula police to apprehend Alauddin.
According to sources, Alauddin has a history of dacoities and involvement in the drug trade. He has a number of cases pending against him at the Batadrava police station.
On Friday, he would be transferred from Darrang to Nagaon, sources added.
Atleast 200 people gathered at the Police Station, assaulted the officers on duty, and set fire to the building. They were enraged by the death of Safiqul Islam, a local resident who was detained by the police and died under mysterious circumstances.
