Assam pugilist Lovlina Borgohain qualifies for Pre-Quarters at Tokyo Olympics
Guwahati: Assam Boxer Lovlina Borgohain has qualified for the first round at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.
The Olympics’ debutant boxer made it to the pre-quarters without contending as the opponent withdrew from contesting the first round of the Women’s 69kg Welterweight category.
Borgohain will be contesting Germany’s Nadine Apetz in her opening clash on July 27. Lovlina is making her Olympic debut among women from the state.
Earlier on July 21, state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and many others took out a bicycle rally in the city to send her best wishes.
Sarma, Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia participated in the bicycle rally- “Go for Glory – Lovlina”- along with several ministers, scores of MLAs, and senior officials that started at Last Gate and concluded at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati.
In June, the state government had extended financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the Arjuna awardee to help her prepare for the mega sporting event.
The much-delayed Tokyo Olympics were scheduled from July 23 to August 8.
