Guwahati: Released after over one year of detention, Sibsagar MLA and Raijor Dal (RD) president Akhil Gogoi announced that his party has already broken the alliance with regional front Assam Jatiya Parishad, led by former All Assam Students Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
Both RD and AJP were the outcome of the state’s anti Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in which both the sides had declared to contest the state assembly polls not only to uproot the ruling BJP but to scrap the CAA once in power. Both the parties had also joined hands ahead the polls and decided to fight together.
While AJP had drawn a blank and the RD managed one seat with Gogoi winning as an independent MLA from Sibsagar constituency.
Gogoi on Sunday said, “AJP and Raijor Dal are no longer in alliance. In fact both the parties decided to part ways amidst the state polls when Opposition failed to unite to check BJP.”
Gogoi who was in judicial custody during the election had appealed all the anti BJP forces to join hands to stop vote division and defeat BJP. However, AJP did not back the theory and constantly kept saying that they don’t want to join hands with any national party like Congress and others.
Out of the state’s total 126 constituencies, the AJP had contested in 83 seats and the RD in 38. In 16 constituencies, both the parties fielded candidates and even fought against each other leading to the division of anti-CAA votes.
While BJP bagged 60 seats, its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won nine and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) six. On the other hand, opposition Congress bagged 29 seats, AIUDF 16, BPF four and the CPI (M) cornered one seat.
On July 1, Gogoi walked free after some 567 days of imprisonment following his arrest in December 2019 for his alleged role in the violent anti-CAA movement in Assam. The National Investigation Agency failed to frame any charge against him.
