Assam reports 3 more COVID deaths; CM Sarma attends a VC convened by PM Modi
Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam is confident in dealing with the third wave of the COVID pandemic, the recent surge of which has been perpetrated by the Omicron variant of the virus.
Stating the preparedness of the state in view of the sudden spike in the coronavirus cases at a video conference convened by the Prime Minister to take a review of the COVID situation prevailing in different states, Dr Sarma thanked Prime Minister Modi for Rs. 670 crore Emergency COVID Response Package (ECRP) which helped the State government to ramp up its health infrastructure to deal with COVID and its manifestations.
He said that the extraordinary health situation caused by the COVID 19 pandemic and the matching health infrastructure created in the state has made the government confident in tackling the pandemic.
He said, “Assam is confident to deal with the third wave caused by Omicron infections. But at the same time, it is taking a cautious approach in strategising its COVID care management to keep the infection at a manageable level.”
He also stated that since the vaccine is the most potent tool to beat the infection, his government has gone all out in vaccinating the eligible people of the state. He also said Assam has covered 95 per cent of the population with the first dose of vaccination and 71 per cent of people have already been covered by the second dose. He also said that Assam has also started the precaution dose (booster dose) for the front line workers and senior citizens along with giving COVID inoculations to the 15 to 18 years age groups. He also exuded confidence that Assam will complete the second COVID jab to all eligible people by February 10.
It may be noted that of all the active cases in the state, 7 per cent of patients required hospitalization as of 12 January 2022.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta, Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Principal to the Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary Health Anurag Goel, Mission Director NHM Dr Lakshamanan S. and others were present during the VC.
In the last 24 hours, Assam reported another 3,238 COVID cases out of 41,165 tests done.
Of the 3,238 COVID cases, the Kamrup Metro district alone recorded 1,070 cases.
Currently, the positivity rate stands at 7.87%.
Meanwhile, the state reported three more deaths due to COVID infection.
