Assam: Section 144 clamped in parts of Guwahati anticipating misconduct
Guwahati: The Assam administration on Sunday has imposed Section 144 of CrPC in the area of West Police District in Guwahati with immediate effect, anticipating misconduct by individuals or groups.
Navaneet Mahanta, Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Guwahati West Police District, issued a notification order on February 28, 2021, saying that assembly of five persons, agitation, demonstration, procession and shouting slogans in the entire West Police District has been prohibited without prior permission from the competent authority.
“Whereas it has been made to appear to me that some specifies and unspecified persons or groups of persons or organisation/associations are likely to disturb the normal functioning of Offices, movement of public and flow of traffic in parts of West Police district, Guwahati,” the order stated.
It further mentioned, “It is apprehended that such groups of persons or organisations/associations are planning or carry out agitation/demonstration/shouting of slogans in parts of West Police District, Guwahati which may cause breach of peace and public order and may cause disturbance/interruption of peaceful movement of public, traffic and also normal functioning of Offices in above mentioned areas.”
Any person aggrieved by this order shall appear before the police to state the reason for breaching the order.
The order came into force with immediate effect and shall remain unless withdrawn.
The West Police District of Guwahati includes the areas under jurisdiction of Bharalumukh, Fatasil Ambari, Gorchuk, Jalukbari and Azara Police station.
