Guwahati: Seven more members of the Waris Punjab De outfit are expected to join the four aides in Assam’s Dibrugarh central jail shortly.
“Four accused are currently lodged in the Dibrugarh Central Jail and as per the information we have received, seven more members of the same organization will be flown to Dibrugarh, today or tomorrow,” the official said.
Earlier on Sunday morning, a 27-member Punjab Police team flew in four aides of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh to Assam’s Dibrugarh amid tight security.
Currently lodged in the Dibrugarh jail are Daljit Singh Kalsi, who is reportedly the financer of Waris Punjab De and a close aide of Amritpal Singh. The other three are Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pradhanmantri Bajeka.
The Punjab Police has launched a massive statewide cordon and search operation against members of the Waris Punjab De outfit, against whom several cases stand registered. The police arrested 78 of Amritpal Singh’s associates Saturday and four among them were brought to Dibrugarh by a special Indian Air Force flight.
“So far, 114 people have been arrested for attempting to disturb peace and harmony. As many as 78 of them were arrested on the first day, 34 on Day 2, and two others were arrested last night. Ten weapons have been recovered so far,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and order) Prashanta Kumar Bhuyan arrived here on Monday to hold a high-level meeting on security issues after four arrested members of an outfit headed by radical preacher Amritpal Singh were lodged in a Dibrugarh jail, officials said.
