Unidentified miscreants throw acid on carpenter in Assam

Guwahati: In another shocking incident, a 17-year-old girl was attacked with battery acid allegedly by a 20-year-old man in Assam’s Barpeta, officials informed on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Sunday in Mazdia village under the Sarthebari police station. The incident happened when the girl was returning home after attending a cultural programme.

The accused has been identified as Meher Ali.

“According to preliminary investigations, the accused and the victim recently ended their relationship. The accused, upset over the breakup, attacked the victim with acid battery (sulphuric acid)”, the official said.

Following the incident, the girl sustained injuries on her neck and shoulder and was admitted to a local hospital. Meanwhile, police have arrested Meher and an investigation into the matter has been launched.

On Monday too, a businessman was arrested in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district for attacking a woman in her 30s with acid.
