Assam To Conduct 1 Lakh Random COVID-19 Rapid Tests

In Assam, out of 29 positive COVID-19 cases, 28 are linked to Tablighi Jamaat held in Delhi's Nizamuddin Markaz congregation

Following a sharp hike in the number of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) positive cases, the Assam government has decided to go for one lakh random rapid tests in some select zones.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that the government will procure 1 lakh rapid testing kits to conduct the tests. In Assam, out of 29 positive COVID-19 cases, 28 are linked to Tablighi Jamaat held in Delhi’s Nizamuddin Markaz congregation.

“The procurement process of rapid testing kits has already started. The kits will reach us by April 22nd-23rd, 2020. The Assam government has decided to go for one lakh rapid tests in some select zones,” said Sarma.

    Athgaon Masjid in Guwahati sealed

The Athgaon Kabarsthan Masjid in Guwahati was declared a ‘containment zone’ on April 10th, 2020 after it came to light that three COVID-19 positive patients were present in a congregation of around 100 people there on March 12th, 2020.

The Masjid has been sealed for 14 days. Those inside it will be provided essential commodities by the administration, the Minister said.

The three patients hail from Karimganj, Bilasipara and Dhurbi districts of Assam. Out of the 100 attendees, eight attended the religious congregation in Nizamuddin Markaz. Out of eight Markaz attendees, three persons have already tested positive for COVID-19.

Sarma said that the mosque has now turned out to be a hotspot of the highly contagious COVID-19. The Assam government at present has a list of 58 persons out of 100.

A total of 2,736 people have been tested in Assam so far and 29 were found COVID-19 positive.

“Out of the positive patients, five people have tested negative recently. The lone non-Nizamuddin positive patient of the state has tested negative twice on April 8th and April 9th,” Sarma said.
