GUWAHATI: Assam government has decided to install smart fencing along the India-Bangladesh border in Karimganj town. The smart fencing will include an advanced surveillance system and alarm gadgetry.
The smart fencing will be used to seal the unfenced part of the international border, a stretch of 4.5 kilometers between India and Bangladesh in the Karimganj town of Assam.
Earlier, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) had objected to physical fencing of the Indo-Bangla border in Karimganj town.
As per international border rules, fencing on either side of the border should be erected 150 yards away from the main point.
A part of Karimganj town, however, will end up on the Bangladesh side if physical fencing is erected according to international border rules.
The state government had sought relaxations in international border rules to save the part of Karimganj town.
With the BGB showed no interest in relaxations of international border rules, the state’s home department has decided to go for the alternate of smart fencing in the area.
