Assam University Shut As Students Protest Against Rustication Of Leader

Students have demanded the revocation of rustication orders as well as withdrawal of the case filed against Milon Das, president of the University Research Scholar Forum

The Assam University has been shut for over a week with the students staging an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the rustication of a student leader.

Students have demanded the revocation of rustication orders as well as withdrawal of the case filed against Milon Das, the president of the University Research Scholar Forum.

The university authority had filed a case against Das charging him with criminal intimidation, damaging university property and causing unrest.

The students claimed that Das was targeted because he had brought several serious malpractices to the fore in one of the oldest central universities in the Northeast.

Some of the students fell sick during the protests. The sick students were provided medical assistance.

Classes had to be suspended last week as the deadlock between student bodies and university officials showed no signs of breaking.  The university convocation, which was supposed to be held on March 1st, is also likely to be suspended, sources said.
