Guwahati: To promote indigenous weaves of Assam, the Women’s India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI) launched its Handloom Council in the state on Monday.
The council aims to make the indigenous artisans stakeholders in the economic growth of the state.
The digital launch of the council was inaugurated by Swapnail Barua, former commissioner of the state department of industries and commerce, during a ceremony held in the city.
To highlight the artisans who need to be credited for their creations, a campaign ‘Hand Behind the Looms’ was also launched by Alakananda Das, social entrepreneur and president of the India-Bangladesh Business Council, WICCI.
A discussion on the topic “Assam textile in the Global Arena” was also held on the occasion. Many prominent participants took part in the discussion.
The director of state handloom and textile department, Kavita Deka was also present in the launch.
