Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that Guwahati will soon have the largest lake at Silsako.

“A spectacular model of the proposed Silsako lake has been designed and it will add to the scenic grandeur & ease the perennial artificial flooding in Guwahati,” chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

On Monday, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) evicted around 300 families of indigenous people and razed two temples on Silsako Beel near the Chanchal area of VIP road as part of the ongoing drive against the encroachment of government land in Assam.

As per officials, there are around 1800 bighas of land in Silsako Beel, of which 1200 bighas of land are under the clutches of encroachers.

At least 1,000 police personnel were deployed at Guwahati’s Silsako Beel to clear out around 132 acres of land from alleged encroachers.
