As per reports, the incident took place on May 21st, 2019 when the accused mother identified as Rupamoni Konwar allegedly took her daughter to Sivasagar and ‘forced’ her to marry a 45-year-old man on the pretext of visiting her aunt’s place.

Meanwhile, the locals claimed that the accused had attempted her daughter’s early marriage after she could not secure good marks in her HSLC examination.

The family hails from Naharkatiya in Dibrugarh district. Rupamoni was familiar with the 45-year-old Raju Chetia. He has three children and had lost his wife a few months back, the locals said.

The victim alleged that, on a fateful day, she was taken to Moran’s Rajgarh area and thereafter was forced inside a four-wheeler to Demow’s Nitaipukhuri area.

“They kept me at his house on Wednesday and even attempted to put sindoor, I had no choice but shout for help. Hearing screams the neighbours reached out for help and I was rescued,” said the victim.

Currently, the girl has been handed over to a team of child protection. The police have taken custody of both Rupamoni Konwar and Raju Chetia on criminal charges of kidnapping and child marriage.
