Guwahati, September 20: The Delhi police have arrested a Nigerian man along with his wife hailing from Assam for allegedly duping people on the pretext of getting their goods cleared from the customs department in New Delhi.
The accused man has been identified as Ifeanyi Joachin Nwafor alias Joe. He hails from Lagos in Nigeria. Joe claimed to be a football player for state clubs of Nigeria.
An amount of Rs 6.5 lakh along with 12 mobile phones, laptops have been seized from their possession.
The forgery came to light when a woman lodged a police complaint a few months ago with the Delhi police.
As per the complainant, a UK based man had contacted her through Facebook and requested her to accept a few gifts on his behalf which he wanted to distribute among the poor in India.
Later in the month of July, the complainant received a call from a lady claiming herself to be from the customs asking for deposition of money for clearance of the goods, to which she reportedly had to pay a sum of Rs 95,600.
After getting several calls for deposition of money the lady got suspicious about the whole incident and lodged a complaint with the police.
Based on the complaint, the police started an investigation, following which the duo were arrested.
