Taking a leap towards cleanliness two towns from Assam– Hailakandi and Golaghat have been officially certified as Open Defecation Free plus (ODF+) by the Swachh Bharat Mission(SBM).

The ODF Plus is an extension of the ODF programme under the Modi government’s SBM with an objective to take up solid and liquid waste management which includes biodegradable waste management, plastic waste management, greywater management and faecal sludge management.

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has defined ODF plus as an area where there is awareness on personal hygiene along with the availability of toilets, cleanliness of water resources, maintenance of public and household toilets. The Ministry has added that it aims at achieving all-round cleanliness in an area.

A survey says that around 1,301 towns and cities in India including both the towns in Assam have been certified as ODF plus towns.
