Assam’s Pobitora sanctuary records 107 one-horned rhinos
Recently, 107 rhinoceros were counted comprising 30 males, 50 females and 27 calves at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary too.

Guwahati: In what might bring cheer to conservators and wildlife lovers, Assam Pobitora wildlife sanctuary, which just spans 38.81 sq km, has recorded 107 one-horned rhinos.

A census carried out in the sanctuary on Tuesday and Wednesday recorded presence of 107 rhino compared to 102 recorded in the last census carried out in 2012.

The entire wildlife sanctuary was divided into nine blocks for counting rhinos, with 11 enumerators and 9 observers from various organisations deployed over the two days.

107 rhinoceros were counted comprising 30 males, 50 females and 27 calves at Pobitora, which is an increase of 5 animals over the last count of 102 conducted in 2018.

It is also to be mentioned that no incidents of poaching have been reported from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary since 2014.
