Guwahati: An Assam Rifle personnel from Assam’s Barpeta district identified as Pranay Kalita was killed in the Manipur ambush on Wednesday evening. Kalita, a 38-year-old Havildar was also part of the Army unit which was targeted by the militant in Chandel district near the Myanmar border south in Manipur.
At least three soldiers of Assam Rifles have been reportedly killed while six others sustained injuries in an ambush on the Army unit in Chandel district near the Myanmar border south in Manipur.
The ambush took place late on Wednesday late evening at Sajik Tampak in Chandel district, some 100 km south of Imphal.
Kalita hailed from Assam’s Barpeta district and had joined the forces in 2001. Kalita is survived by his wife, parents and two daughters— two years old and 13-years old, currently lives at Gatbar village of Patacharkuchi in Barpeta district.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed his condolence for Kalita and the bereaved family.
Sources said that insurgents detonated an IED and opened fire at the Army unit when the patrol team was returning. According to reports, the terrorists were affiliated to the local group People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
