Ban On Liquor In Mizoram From April

Aizawl, February 16, 2019

The Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Minister K Beichhua informed that the Zoramthanga-led Mizo National Front(MNF) government would impose total prohibition of liquor in the state from April.

As per information, a liquor prohibition law is reportedly on the process of drafting which is likely to be presented at the forthcoming state assembly sitting in March this year.

It may be mentioned that the MNF chief Zoramthanga before coming into power had said that his party would lift The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition & Control) Act and re-impose total prohibition in the state if it voted to power.

The MNF government when it was in power from December 1998 to December 2008 had abided by the liquor prohibition. However, during the Congress rule led by Lal Thanhawla government the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition and Control) Act, 2014 had eased a few norms. Under the liquor cardholders were allowed to purchase a limited amount of liquor from wine shops.
