Guwahati: After a decline for a few days in the numbers of Covid 19 cases, the capital city of Guwahati has once again seeing a surge in the numbers of Covid positive cases. Though initially it was believed that the city’s falling trend would continue to go further down, the recent spike has once again caused worry to the state’s health department.
On Tuesday, Assam Chief Secretary, Kumar Sanjay Krishna, has asked people to continue with all the preventive measures of Covid-19. He said, “There is a slight increase in the number of the cases in Kamrup (M), so would like to urge everyone to continue taking all the preventive measures and staying safe.”
Out of the total 2886 fresh Covid 19 cases detected on Tuesday, at least 550 were from the city alone.
“On Monday, the city had recorded 414 cases and on Sunday, the number was 268. So a spike is clearly visible and which is worrying. Since the lockdown was eased and public movement has increased, the numbers have also gone up. Now the state government has been analyzing whether it was a straight result of the unlock down or else,” said an official from NHM on condition of anonymity.
Six more Covid 19 patients succumbed to their infections on Wednesday taking the total death toll of the state to 115.
State’s health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been attributing the rise in the numbers of the Covid 19 positive cases to a large number of testing in the state. Earlier, the state government had said that it would target to conduct over 50 thousand tests on Tuesday.
Sarma said, “In pursuit of our commitment to contain Covid 19 infections in our state, we have completed 59,064 numbers of tests on Tuesday. By far, this is the highest number of tests we have achieved in a single day. For the next ten days, we will continue with massive testing across the state.”
Assam has already conducted one million Covid 19 tests in the state since February. From setting up the first lab in February, the state currently has 17 labs.
