Bharat Bandh: Agitators Burn Tyres, Paralyzes Normal Life In Assam

Ten central trade unions are observing the all-India strike today in order to press for a total of 14 demands

The trade unions’ nationwide strike called on January 8th, 2020 alleging “anti-working class policies of the Modi-led government” has affected normal life in Assam.

Most of the business establishments, banking sectors in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazaar, South Kamrup, Mirza remained closed in the morning hours. Communication was hit as there are no plying of public transports on the roads.

In Sivasagar, the Oil India Limited employees union extended their support to the nationwide shutdown as shops, commercial establishments remained closed. Agitators chanting anti-BJP, anti-CAA slogans burnt tyres to protest against the policies of the government.

It may be noted, the trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC along with various independent federations and associations had adopted a declaration in September 2019 to go on a nationwide strike on January 8th, 2020.

It may be mentioned that as many as ten central trade unions are observing the all-India strike today in order to press for a total of 14 demands.

A joint statement read that around 25 crore people will participate in the strike to protest against the central government’s “anti-people” policies. The left lead farmer bodies have also extended their support to the strike. Apart from transport and other services across the country are likely to be hit by the strike.

The unions have also condemned the JNU violence and attack on students in other university campuses in the country.
