In a major breakthrough, the Bureau of Investigations Economic Offences (BIEO) sleuths arrested the Chief Managing Director and Director of a company called Quantoe Traders on December 22nd, 2019 in West Bengal. The company was registered with ROC Shillong.
The accused, who have been identified as Sujan Sarkar and Sutapa Roy, were arrested from Alipurduar in West Bengal. Roy, the director of the company, was apprehended from the residential locality in the city and Sarkar was also arrested when he was trying to sneak away in his personal car.
“The arrested aced persons who were absconding and evading arrest for long have been arrested under charges of cheating various persons across the Assam especially from far-flung areas to the tune of more than a crone by the false promise of giving them distributorship of ATM swipe machines. More and more victims are now coming forward through social media posts like Facebook etc narrating how the duo duped them of their hard-earned money. All such victims are being examined by the BEIO and pieces of evidence being collected,” a press communiqué stated.
Earlier, the accused was involved in operating an office at Bora service in Guwahati and engaged local accomplices as agents to carry out their fraudulent activities. “After cheating the victims, they closed the office and fled away. They did not even pay any salary to the local persons whom they had engaged as employees in their office,” the communiqué stated.
Later, a case (Case no 15/2019) under sections 120(H), 420 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code and 4, 5 and 6 of the PC & MCS (B) Act was registered against the person on the basis of the victims in October this year.
Earlier in October, Ranjit Hazarika and Ranjan Aich were apprehended from Lakhimpur and Tangla respectively in the same case.
The accused were produced before the Court at Alipurduar and brought to Guwahati on transit remand. They are being produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro).
