Guwahati: Giving a major boost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Sikkim, 10 MLAs of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) joined the saffron party on August 13th, 2019 in New Delhi. This move has dwindled the position of Pawan Kumar Chamling, founder of SDF.
The 10 MLAs joined the BJP in the presence of the party’s working president JP Nadda and BJP general secretary Ram Madhav.
It may be mentioned here, Sikkim was the only state in the entire Northeast region where the saffron party was not in power. The other 6 states of the region are run by BJP with its partner North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a political coalition that was formed by on May 24th, 2019.
With 10 MLAs of SDF joining the BJP, its strength in the Sikkim Assembly falls to just five members.
