Guwahati, March 12, 2019

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will jointly fight the coming Lok Sabha elections, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav announced on March 12th, 2019. All the three AGP ministers who had tendered resignations will withdraw their resignation papers.

The announcement came after top AGP leadership had an hour-long discussion with BJP’s central leadership. It may be recalled, the AGP which pulled out from the NDA alliance over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, has formed a seven-member panel to chalk-out the party strategy and to recommend as to with whom the regional party should go in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Madhav said that the candidates of the BJP-AGP-BPF alliance will fight the elections from 14 constituencies in Assam in the general elections. “We will together ensure that Congress is defeated in all the 14 seats of the state,” he said.

The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019. The first phase of voting will take place on April 11th, 2019 while the last phase will be held on May 19th, 2019. The results of the election will be announced on May 23rd, 2019.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said the BJP and its allies will win between 19 and 21 seats out of the Northeast’s 25 Lok Sabha seats. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP won seven of the state’s 14 seats and AGP drew a blank.
