In a surprising turn of events, Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar has been removed amid the violent protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. Munna Prasad Gupta has been appointed as new Guwahati Police Commissioner, as reported by PTI.
Assam’s additional general of police (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwal has been transferred as ADGP (CID). He has been replaced by GP Singh.
Singh is an Assam cadre officer who is presently an inspector general-rank officer of the NIA. LR Bishnoi, additional director general of police (CID) has also been transferred and posted as the additional director general of police (TAP).

KV Singh Deo, Assam’s additional director general of police was posted as the additional director general of police (Border) as additional charge.

Thousands of people defied curfew on December 12th, 2019 in Guwahati and took to the streets to oppose the Bill, prompting police to open fire.
The Army conducted flag march as the people defied the curfew in Guwahati on the morning of December 12th, 2019 to protest against the Bill.
Police also had to fire in the air in several other areas of the city, including the Guwahati-Shillong (GS) Road which turned into a war zone as protestors vandalised shops, footpath railings, dividers, burnt tyres, torched vehicles and clashed with security forces.

Police said they had to open fire in Lalung Gaon areas in Guwahati after stones were hurled by protesters on December 12th, 2019. At least four persons were injured in the shooting, as per reports.
The Rajya Sabha on December 11th, 2019 approved the Bill, completing the legislative procedure for giving Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
