The prime accused in the high profile Shweta Agarwal murder case, Govind Singhal was convicted by a court here on July 30th, 2019. The quantum of punishment will be delivered on July 31st, 2019.
The court also convicted Singhal’s mother Kamla Devi Singhal and his sister Bhawani Singhal for evading the murder of Shweta The three convicted persons will be sent to Central jail by the evening of July 30th, 2019.
As per police investigation, Govind slit Shweta’s throat following a heated argument between the couple on December 4th, 2017. First, he planned to dump the body in the Bharalu in a gunny bag. Later, he set the body on fire inside the bathroom of his house with the help of his mother and sister.
The incident came to light when the locals saw smoke coming out of his house. Govind, his mother and sister tried to project Shweta’s death as suicide, police had said.
Shweta was the state topper in her 12th grade in the commerce stream in 2015. At the time of the murder, she was a student of 5th semester B Com student in KC Das Commerce College here. Her murder had triggered a huge public outcry across the state.
Both Govind and Shweta were also working in a Guwahati-based CA firm. Things were going fine between the couple until Govind started planning to shift to Siliguri. Shweta wanted Govind to marry her but he “avoided the topic”, which led to frequent fights between them. Shweta’s family was, however, unaware about the relationship.
On the fateful day, Shweta, dressed in her college uniform, had visited Govind’s house at Santipur, Sluice Gate in Bharalumukh. A heated argument escalated to a fight and they pushed and shoved each other around. At one time, Govind pushed her too hard against a wall. “She screamed and fell down unconscious. Her jaw was locked,” Hiren Nath, the then Guwahati Commissioner of Police told Time8.
Govind panicked when he failed to detect Shweta’s pulse. It was then he thought of throwing her body in the Bharalu river. He tied the blood-soaked body wrapped in a gunny bag on his bike. But he came back home without dumping the body as he thought “it might be traced back to him if the body is recovered as some people had seen him carry the gunny bag on his bike”. Police recovered traces of blood on his bike.
Govind then dragged the body to the bathroom of his house. He poured kerosene on it and set fire to Shweta’s body.
