A man in Biswanath was allegedly prevented from performing his father’s last rites for marrying a “non-Brahmin” girl. Rupjyoti Bhattacharya, the only son of Suresh Chandra Bhattacharya and Neeru Bhattacharya, was allegedly “pushed, shoved and chased away” when he arrived at his house to perform the last rites of his father.
Suresh breathed his last in Gorehagi Gaon of Biswanath Chariali in the Biswanath district on March 8th, 2019. Rupjyoti, a brahmin, married a girl from lower caste six years back. On March 12th, 2019, he took to Facebook to share his story.
“Six years ago, I tied the knot with a girl from another caste and since then, the Brahmin Samaj is after me. As I married a non-Brahmin girl, the Samaj has barred me from joining any religious ceremonies. They even pressurized me to divorce my wife…for which I had to leave my home and live separately,” he said.
He added, “When I received the news of my father’s death, I rushed home to be with my mother and perform the last rites of my father. But the Brahmin Samaj threatened my mother that they will ostracize our family. My mother has lost everything and the death of my father is like losing her other half. My uncle and aunt also gave my mother an ultimatum to choose between her son and society. My mother, who is not in a state to say anything, asked them (family) to take a decision.”
Rupjyoti further stated that his cousins performed the last rites of his father.
