Guwahati: After two top AIUDF leaders and senior MLAs Rafiqul Islam and Aminul Islam, AIUDF Sonai constituency MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya was cornered by Assam’s top BJP leader over his alleged association with the jihadi outfit.

This comes after Assam cabinet ministers Pijush Hazarika and Jayanta Malla Baruah levelled allegations against the AIUDF in connection with the jihadi outfit.

On Friday, Assam cabinet minister Ashok Singhal in Silchar said, “There should be a high-level enquiry against AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya over his alleged links with Jihadi outfit. We cannot trust these people. The protest at the Assam Legislative Assembly is just a drama and nothing else. Why should our ministers extend an apology? They didn’t commit any crime and who are they to give us a deadline to extend an apology?”

In the morning hours, the AIUDF MLAs handed over a memorandum to the Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly urging him to take appropriate steps against the baseless and slanderous remarks made by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika toward two Senior MLAs Dr Rafiqul Islam and Aminul Islam.

The delegation headed by AIUDF Legislature Party leader Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi Sahab comprised MLA Aminul Islam, MLA – Dhing, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, Rafiqul Islam, Haji Nijam Uddin Choudhury, Suzam Uddin Laskar, Zakir Hussain Laskar and Ashraful Hussain

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia also reacted to the growing jihadi activities in Assam and the relationship of AIUDF with it.

Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia on Friday reacted to the chief minister’s public media remarks that Assam will be the new hub of Islamic fundamentalism.

Saikia informed the media that the Congress party never supports power that threatens the integrity of India and does not support any such activities that could harm Assam.

Saikia also reiterated that jihadi or any terrorist activities must be curbed with a strong hand. He said his anti-terrorism stand is intact, saying that two Prime Ministers of India and well-leaders of the Congress party, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, respectively, had to be lost to such acts of terrorism, a significant loss for the country.

He said the Congress party had earlier launched a campaign against terrorism, taking the reports of various central agencies seriously, and said it is imperative for the present government to maintain this anti-terrorism position.

Saikia also mentioned that a BJP minister has already levelled allegations against The AIUDF in connection with the jihadi outfit and said there is a need to review all aspects in this regard.

Thus, Debabrata Saikia demanded that the BJP government curb any terrorism with a strong hand.

Saikia said no person involved in the case should be outside the periphery of the investigation, incredibly demanding a high-level inquiry into the newly formed jihadi activities in Assam and the relationship of AIUDF with such jihadi organizations.

The opposition leader reiterated that the BJP and The AGP party had also made similar allegations in 2014 and issued a memorandum to the country’s highest leadership and party organizations like AGP, BJP, Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, etc protested and even called for a 12-hour Assam bandh. The top Congress leader also requested the home department to probe the allegations levelled against the AIUDF MLA by sending a letter to the then home minister Rajnath Singh on October 22 that same year, stating that the state BJP had advocated an inquiry into the allegations against the AIUDF.

Since the allegations have been raised against the AIUDF again, there is a need for a transparent investigation in this regard and the people of Assam to provide fearlessness in this matter.

Saikia also raises his concern that if the members of the Legislative Assembly themselves are accused of indulging in terrorist funding and activities, then what will be the legitimacy of the highest house of the state?

Saikia even reiterated that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had alleged that AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal was running the party in 2021 with funds from foreign fundamentalist organizations.

The opposition leader also demanded that the two governments should curb any terrorism by announcing a high-level inquiry into the matter. But Saikia also made it clear that Congress will keep a close watch on the harassment of innocent people in the name of seeking jihadis. He reiterated that the procedures adopted in various sensitive areas of India in the field of terrorist detection should be carried out here as well.

Saikia said that their names and addresses should be made public as well as photographs should be made public for the public to identify, adding that the government should also make public a report on the steps taken by the home department against jihadi organizations by giving details of the terror activities carried out in Assam in the past. So that people in those areas can exercise caution from such activities.
