GUWAHATI: Sharpening the attack on BJP led government in both Centre and state, top Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi accused the BJP government of ‘disrespecting’ the ideologies of Mahapurush Srimanta Shankardev by bringing the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Priyanka Gandhi, was in Assam on a two-day visit for election campaigning.

Addressing a rally for Congress in Nagaon she said, “I find it very strange when the BJP leaders talk about the ideology of Srimanta Shankardev and do the complete opposite. While the great saint had tried to unite the entire Assamese society and enriched its culture and language, BJP is trying to divide the society by bringing CAA.”

She said that CAA would attack the identity, culture, history and the entire fabric of Assamese society if implemented.

“The same BJP leaders, who say that CAA will be implemented in West Bengal election rallies, remain silent on it when they come to Assam. It’s the typical double standard that the BJP government has,” she added.

Remembering the martyrs of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) she said, “I have met the victim’s families of CAA movement. What was their crime? They just wanted to save the Assamese culture, language and the rights of their own people but the cruel BJP government shot them. None of the leaders have even met the victim families for courtesy’s sake. BJP has no ideology but only wants to rule the people at any cost.”

In Assam, at least five persons including school student was killed in police firing during the anti-CAA movement in 2019.

The Congress general secretary also slammed the BJP government for not fulfilling the promises of providing employment to youths of Assam, implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord and increase in wages of tea plantation workers.

Gandhi during her visit also visited Batadrawa Than – the birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Shankardev and attend a rally at Batadrava in Nagaon. This was the second visit of Priyanka Gandhi in the poll-bound Assam.
