Guwahati, May 24, 2019
The former three-time Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on May 24th, 2019 said that Congress failed to give an impressive performance in the recently concluded general elections since the party lagged behind in terms of using money power to polarise the votes.
“The BJP used money power for the win in the recently concluded general elections. The saffron party’s divide and rule policy also worked for them,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi, while admitting the Congress’ defeat, said, “I hoped for a better performance of the party but failed to do so. I won’t say Congress gave a destitute performance in Assam since it has managed to retain three seats.”
Besides, talking about the Citizenship Amendment Bill, the octogenarian Congress leader said, “The people of the state supported the BJP despite the saffron party’s attempt to implement the bill to grant citizenship to the illegal migrants.”
“I am surprised to see the peoples’ mandate even after the BJP in its last term failed to fulfil the promises made before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections,” Gogoi said before leaving to New Delhi on May 24th, 2019.
