Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Kokrajhar district of Assam, state authorities have stepped up security preparations for the VVIP movement.

The Assam government has invited Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to visit the state on February 7th, 2020 to celebrate the signing of the historic Bodo Peace Accord.

Assam Finance Minister and NEDA Convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 1st, 2020 along with Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary, ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh, and IGP (SB) Hiren Nath reviewed preparations for the event. All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) leaders and Kokrajhar MP Biswajit Daimary too visited the site of the event.

Sarma had earlier said that the people of Assam will “hear some good news soon ahead of the Bohag Bihu.”

The Union home ministry on January 27th, 2020 signed a historic Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) with all the factions of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) and Assam government. The ABSU, which has been spearheading the statehood movement, was also a signatory.

The factions of NDFB viz Gobindo Basumatary faction, Dhirendra Bodo faction, Ranjan Daymari faction and Saoraigwra faction and the United Bodo Peoples Organization are the signatories of the Accord.

Hailing the Accord, Modi said that it would usher in a new dawn of peace, harmony and togetherness and that those associated with armed resistance groups would now enter the mainstream and contribute to the nation’s progress.

A total of 1,615 cadres of NDFB on January 30th, 2020 laid down their arms at a surrender ceremony held in Guwahati.
