Bodo gets associate official language status in Assam

The bill was tabled in the assembly on Monday by parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on behalf of CM Sarbananda Sonowal.

Guwahati: The Bodo language has been given the status of an associate official language in state as the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Assam official Language Amendment Bill.

The bill was tabled in the assembly on Monday by parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on behalf of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the home and political department.

Giving the Bodo language the status of state’s associate officials language was a part of the last Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) accord signed between the Centre, the Assam government, four Bodo rebel groups and two Bodo organisations.

In October, the state government had announced its decision to bring in an ordinance to accord Bodo the status of associate official language.
