Hours before the polling came to an end in Kokrajhar on April 23rd, 2019, three persons – one United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and two All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) workers – sustained severe injuries after being attacked by the ‘supporters of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF)’.

The incident took place a few meters away from the Kokrajhar town. The three injured have been identified as Ratan Basumatary (22), Khormadau Mochahary (23), Dhrubajyoti Brahma (29). They have been shifted to the nearest hospital and are undergoing treatment.

“A few workers of the BPF stopped two vehicles of the ABSU members and started threatening them. The group further attacked them with rods and machete leaving them injured. The BPF supporter also vandalised the vehicles,” said Lawrence Islary, general secretary, ABSU.

“We have started an investigation into the matter. Legal action will be initiated against the culprits,” said Rajen Singh, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police.

Meanwhile, UPPL candidate for Kokrajhar parliamentary seat UG Brahma condemned the incident. “It is unfortunate. A few BPF members were attempting to rig votes in a few polling booths and this might have led to the violence. The law and order situation should be maintained. The district administration should look into the matter.”

An estimated 71.47 per cent voter turnout has been recorded in Assam in the third phase of the Lok Sabha polls till 5 pm, which is being held in four seats on April 23rd, 2019.
