Guwahati: At least 24 persons including main perpetrators & conspirators have been arrested by Assam police in the assault case on Dr. Seuj Kumar Senapati posted in Udali Covid Care Centre in Assam’s Hojai district in the last couple of hours.
Leaving no stone unturned, the Hojai police launched an operation soon after a video of the incident had gone viral in which a group of around 20 people including women were seen manhandling Senapati and beating him with sticks and other items. They also tore his dress.
Two others including a woman were also injured in the attack.
The group of people also damaged the CCC. They alleged negligence by Senapati and the medical team at the CCC for the death of one Giyasuddin.
Meanwhile, informing about the development, Special DG Assam Police, GP Singh took to his official Twitter handle saying, “Further action till 0400 Hours on June 2nd – 24 persons including main perpetrators & conspirators have been arrested. This includes the woman seen in the video.”
It is to be noted that after arresting one of the culprits in the evening hours, in further action – eight persons who are supposedly involved in the assault on Doctor at Hojai had been arrested by the Hojai Police till midnight.
Names of perpetrators picked up till now – 1) Md.Kamaruddin 2) Md. Jainal uddin 3) Rehanuddin 4) Saidul Alam 5) Rahim Uddin 6) Rajul Islam 7) Tayebur Rahman 8) Sahil Islam, stated the top cop in his tweet.
Further, 16 more persons have been picked up by Hojai Police till 12.45 am.
Following the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to his official Twitter handle, thus, condemning the barbaric incident saying, “Such barbaric attacks on our frontline workers won’t be tolerated by our administration. @gpsinghassam @assampolice. Ensure that the culprits brought to justice.”
Ex-Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal also tweeted saying, “The entire nation is indebted to our doctors & medical fraternity as they are displaying exemplary fight against Covid-19. The barbaric attack on a doctor by miscreants in Hojai is despicable, which I strongly condemn. The culprits must be punished at the earliest.”
Earlier, DGP Assam tweeted saying, “We are taking the physical assault incident on Dr. Senapati of Udali Hospital very seriously. He’s fighting the Pandemic at the frontline, so any assault on him is like assaulting all the frontline workers. And @assampolice would not let that happen.”
