Assam is soon going to have a new political outfit born out of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), spearheading the anti-CAA movement in the state, is mulling to float a new political party.
Speaking to reporters in Goalpara, AASU President Dipankar Kumar Nath said, “There is need for a political party which is concerned about the indigenous people in Assam as all the political parties have failed to protect the people.”
He added, “We will start planning soon and the groundwork for the new party will start post-February onwards. Today on uruka, we burnt the copies of the CAA in the meji flames. The Centre must repel the citizenship act.”
Nath participated in a Magh Bihu celebrations in Lower Assam’s Goalpara district on January 15th, 2020. He also burnt the copies of the CAA in meji.
The AASU had earlier hinted of launching a political party along with ‘Shilpi Samaj’ (artistes’ forum) as an alternative to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and to opposition Congress as well.
As per reports, the political party will be launched just ahead of the Assembly polls in Assam that are slated for the early part of next year.
It may be recalled, similar agitations against illegal migrants under the leadership of AASU had led to the formation of the political party AGP.
