Guwahati, March 14, 2019
The list of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be announced on March 17th, 2019.
A delegation of the AGP will fly to New Delhi on March 15th, 2019 to finalise the seat-sharing deal with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah.
Two months after pulling out over the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the AGP and BJP are back as allies in poll-bound Assam. The AGP along with BJP had contested the 2016 Assam Assembly elections and defeated the Congress which had been in power in the state for three consecutive terms since 2001.
“The AGP is going to push for five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat. On March 16th, 2019, the AGP delegation will hold talks with Shah regarding seat-sharing,” said Ramendra Narayan Kalita, AGP general secretary. He added, “The BJP assured not to take up the Bill issue without consulting the AGP.”

It may be recalled that AGP’s three ministers in the Sarbananda Sonowal government – Atul Bora, Keshav Mahanta and Phani Bhushan Choudhury, had resigned in order to protest the NDA-led Centre’s decision to get the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 passed in the Parliament.
“The BJP and AGP have decided to work together in the coming Parliament election in Assam to defeat Congress. The BPF will be the third partner in the alliance. We will together ensure that Congress is defeated in all the 14 seats of Assam,” BJP general secretary Ram Madhav announced on March 12th, 2019.
The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019. The results of the election will be announced on May 23rd, 2019.
