Jorhat, January 11: Amid widespread protests across Assam against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, an angry activist on Friday stripped naked infront of the Deputy Commissioner(DC) demanding lifting of sedation charge against literary critic, poet and social scientist Hiren Gohain.
The activist Mantu Dutta shouted slogans like “Joi Aai Oxom” and warned the Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP government of massive agitations if the controversial Citizenship Bill is passed.
“Time and again we have been saying that the government should not play with the emotions of the people. We have been protesting peacefully against the Citizenship Bill till now. The BJP leaders should stop acting like brokers and take immediate steps from passing the Bill,” said Dutta.
Dutta further added, “The government is playing dirty politics by slapping sedation charges on Hiren Gohain. He should not be arrested,”.
Hiren Gohain was on Thursday booked on charges of sedition by the Latasil Police for his “independent Assam” speech in Guwahati.
The case was registered by the Latasil Police under sections 120(B)/121/123/124(A).
While addressing a gathering in Dighalipukhuri recently, Gohain has reportedly said that passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 can lead to the rise of the demand for an “independent Assam” again, as reported in media.
