Assam Pradesh Youth Congress president Kamrul Islam Choudhury was arrested by Dispur Police in Guwahati on January 23rd, 2020.

Choudhury was named by Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for instigating violence outside Assam Secretariat during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act movement in Guwahati in December last year.

Addressing a press meet in Guwahati last year, Sarma claimed that the Congress leader was involved in the attack on the Dispur secretariat on December 11th, 2019. The Minister also alleged that Choudhury put out social media posts asking people to come to Dispur at 9.30 am.

“Choudhury was seen shaking hands at the site of arson near Dispur. We have found the involvement of PFI and CFI in the incident,” Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.

He added, “The violence at Janata Bhawan was choreographed under the instructions of a leading academician working with a Central government institution. He was monitoring the entire exercise from a control room. They had plans to burn down Janata Bhawan that day. We have seen a design and we are talking with evidence.”
