GUWAHATI: An asst. professor of philosophy at Bengtol College has been apprehended by Chirang Police on Tuesday on charges of allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl who committed suicide on Monday.
The accused was identified as one Prabin Narzary and Runikhata police station has taken him on remand of three days on Tuesday.
State police in a statement said that on Monday, at about 9 A.M. information was received that one minor girl (age14 – yrs.) committed suicide by hanging in the residence of Prabin Narzary from Tukrajhar village in Chirang district and the family members of the victim were trying complete the last rituals without informing local police.
Immediately, a team of Chirang Police rushed to that place.
“During the preliminary inquiry, it came to light that the minor girl was staying in the house of the Asst. Professor for the purpose of study sine last more than one year,” said a police statement.
It added that police also received credible information that the victim had sent a WhatsApp message to her friend informing that she was subjected to sexual assault and didn’t want to live anymore.
“Within few hours of reporting of the crime, the prime accused of the case namely Prabin Narzary has been apprehended by the team of Chirang police,” it added.
Police have booked him under several charges of sexual assault of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
