BREAKING: Biswajit Daimary resigns from Rajya Sabha

Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said BPF leaders like Emmanuel Mosahary and Biswajit Daimary will join BJP shortly

GUWAHATI: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MP Biswajit Daimary on Saturday resigned from his Rajya Sabha MP post.

Last week, Daimary had resigned from his post of working president in BPF on Wednesday. He is likely to join BJP on Sunday.

In a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman, Venkaiah Naidu, Daimary wrote: “As per provisions of the Constitution of India, I hereby resign my seat/ membership in the Rajya Sabha with immediate effect. I, therefore, request that my resignation be accepted by you with immediate effect.”

Daimary said that differences of opinions with the party have forced him to leave BPF.

“As I said, there are several reasons. While the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) agreement was meant to serve the community better, BPF is discarding it. As I intend to work for my people and community in general, I believe it has become difficult to work for me staying inside BPF,” Daimary said.

Earlier, the state’s senior cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “BPF’s senior leaders- Emmanuel Mosahary and Biswajit Daimary will join BJP shortly. Since Daimary is an MP we have fixed a time for his joining.”

BJP believed that the joining of the two prominent BPF leaders into their camp would strengthen the party’s grip in the BTC region. In the ensuing BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council) polls in December, BJP has fielded several of its party candidates against its ally BPF.

Sarma himself has launched massive attacks on BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary during several election campaigns off late. He said Mohilary’s way of functioning has not yielded expected results in the BTC region.

The BJP minister even hinted that the existing alliance between BJP and BPF may not continue in 2021 state polls too.
