Breaking | Cabinet Committee holds first meeting on ST Status

Guwahati, January 20: The cabinet sub-committee formed by the Assam government to look into the issue of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Amendment Bill, 2019 convened its first meeting here on Sunday.

It may be mentioned that the Centre’s plan for the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Amendment Bill, 2019, has evoked anger among tribal communities in Assam. The communities that are proposed to be included in the ST category are Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak and tea tribes of Assam.

The committee is headed by Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The committee will hold talks with the leaders of the Tribal Sangha on January 28, Bodoland Territorial Council on January 29, Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, Tiwa, Thegal, Sonowal, Mishing and Deuri Autonomous Councils on January 30.

The committee will submit its report on February 15.
